Tata Medical Center in Kolkata, India is a state of the art Oncology centre providing comprehensive care in the diagnosis, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of cancer patients. The institution is a not for profit organization established by the Tata Medical Centre Trust and it started operations on 16 May 2022. The hospital has 437 in-patient beds with services in Clinical Haematology, Surgical Oncology, Medical Oncology, Paediatric Oncology, Radiation Oncology and other support services.
The department of Microbiology in Tata Medical Center provides comprehensive list of diagnostic tests in Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Virology, Serology, Parasitology and Environmental Microbiology. About 60,000 tests are done every year in the Department of Microbiology which offers phenotypic and genotypic tests. The Microbiology department is also involved in Antimicrobial Stewardship, Hospital Infection and Control and Diagnostic Stewardship.
The Department of Microbiology at Tata Medical Center in Kolkata, India (www.tmckolkata.com ) is keen to facilitate visit of international trainee doctors from overseas for knowledge/experience sharing in Clinical Microbiology/ Clinical Virology/Infection Control. Three types of visit has been envisaged.
One day visit: In a day the trainee visitor would have an opportunity to familiarize with the different diagnostic techniques used in the department of Microbiology. They would also have an opportunity to interact with Consultants in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases to understand epidemiology of various infections in cancer patients. The visitor can also interact with doctors and nurses in Critical Care Unit to understand various clinical and infection control issues in Oncology patients where there is a high endemicity of multidrug resistant and extensively drug resistant bacteria and fungi.
One week visit: In addition to the opportunities available through a one day visit to the department, a one week visitor would be able to participate in weekly training sessions in the institution and department such as Grand round lectures, bone marrow transplant meetings, journal club, departmental teaching. Besides they can participate in clinical rounds with Clinical Microbiologists and Infectious Disease Physicians to see patients in Critical Care Unit, general wards, private wards. The visitor would have an opportunity to see some laboratory techniques such as virological assays (PCR and serology), carbapenem resistance gene PCR, fungal PCR, pathogen identification by DNA sequencing.
One month visit: With a one month observation the visitor would be able to see additional processes in facilities such as the CSSD- Central Sterile Supply Department, Hospital Laundry, Operation Theatre, Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Water Treatment Plant, Effluent Treatment Plant, Sewage Treatment Plant, Hospital Pharmacy, Biomedical waste segregation and management, Cleaning and Housekeeping. The visitor would also have the opportunity to see Infectious Disease Clinics, Staff Health Clinics, speciality clinics such as in Clinical Haematology, Paediatric Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplantation. The visitor can do short surveys and audits on various clinical and laboratory issues and participate in various multi-disciplinary meetings.
