WHAT DO WE DO?
We offer a comprehensive diagnostic service for UHSFT, Southampton Solent Sexual Health and GP Surgeries in the Southampton area. We also provide some diagnostic work for the South 6 Pathology Network (Hampshire, Dorset and the IOW) and other hospitals outside the Wessex region.
Our molecular repertoire includes:
o Anogenital ulcer PCR (VZV, HSV, Syphilis, enterovirus & parechovirus)
o Blood borne viruses viral load (Abbott Alinity m)
o Neonatal viral sepsis panel (HSV, VZV, enterovirus, parechovirus)
o HSCT monitoring (CMV, EBV, adenovirus and Toxoplasma gondii)
o Renal transplant monitoring (CMV, EBV and BKV)
o Red rash (measles, adenovirus, enterovirus & parechovirus)
o Respiratory pathogen panel (Respiratory viruses, Pneumocystis jirovecii, Bordetella pertussis)
o STI panel on Abbott Alinity m: Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma genitalium and Trichomonas vaginalis PCR
o Vesicular rash PCR panel (HSV, VZV, enterovirus and parechovirus)
Our serology repertoire includes:
o Cytomegalovirus (IgM, IgG , IgG confirmation and IgG avidity)
o Epstein Barr virus (nuclear antigen IgG, VCA IgM, IgG and IgG avidity)
o Hepatitis A virus (IgM & total antibodies)
o Hepatitis B virus (HBsAg, HBV total core antibodies, HBV core IgM, HBeAg, anti-HBe, anti-HBs)
o Hepatitis C IgG
o Hepatitis E virus (IgM & IgG)
o HIV (5th generation p24 & p26 antigens plus antibody screening assay, 4th generation p24 antigen plus antibody confirmatory assay and HIV-1 & -2 serotyping)
o Antistreptolysin O (ASO)
o Bordetella pertussis anti-toxin IgG
o Borrelia burgdorferi (IgM & IgG)
o Herpes simplex virus (type specific and type common IgG)

Out of hours’ service
o We provide a 24/7 diagnostic service for rapid respiratory and gastrointestinal PCR in admission wards.
o We provide a 7/7 service (07:00 to 17:30) for the routine diagnostic work. In normal working hours; please call 023 8120 6408
o We provide a 7/7 extended day (09:00-20:00) medical virology cover. Please call the UHS switchboard on 023 8077 7222, asking for the duty Medical Virologist
