WHAT DO WE DO?
Molecular diagnosis:
In Southampton the molecular diagnostics laboratory uses real time PCR (ABI 7500, Abbott M2000) for the detection of viral and bacterial nucleic acids in clinical samples.
Tests are routinely performed for the detection of the following pathogens:
- HSV-1
- HSV-2
- VZV
- CMV
- EBV
- Adenoviruses
- Enteroviruses
- Parechovirus
- Chlamydia trachomatis
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae
- Meningococci
- Respiratory viruses (see below)
- Noroviruses
Quantitative assays are available for:
- HCV RNA (Abbott M2000)
- HBV DNA (Abbott M2000)
- HIV RNA (Abbott M2000)
- CMV DNA and EBV DNA (in-house assay)
- HCV genotyping (Abbott M2000)
Respiratory PCR targets includes:
- Influenza A virus
- Influenza A subtyping (H1, H3, H5)
- Oseltamivir resistance testing for H1N1pdm09
