WHAT DO WE DO?
The Wales Specialist Virology Centre (WSVC) is made up of the main centre in Cardiff and a satellite lab in Swansea. It is the primary testing centre for the Cardiff and Swansea populations and the laboratory Cardiff acts as the tertiary referral centre for virology from across Wales.
The WSVC supports the Public Health Wales network of laboratories and the Welsh NHS laboratories that sit outside this network. It provides clinical and scientific advice pertaining to virological infection and diagnosis to service users, Public Health Wales and Welsh Government.
The combined centres offer a wide range of virological serological and molecular screening and confirmation assays. It provides specialist support to the antenatal, paediatric and immunosuppressed populations (jncluding BMT and renal transplant services) and to sexual health services.
The molecular repertoire includes CNS, faecal infection screens and monitoring of HCV, HBV, CMV and EBV infections. The respiratory virus testing including for the respiratory enteroviruses, Influenza and SARS-COV-2, feeds into the Welsh, UK and global surveillance systems through the Welsh National Influenza Centre function as part of the WSVC in Cardiff.
The testing repertoire is continually expanding and a wide range of specialist tests are available by request.
